Musculoskeletal Services

Musculoskeletal Services in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Public Survey
During May and June 2018, we sought the views of patients and the public about services which support people with conditions affecting bones, ligaments, muscles and joints (for example back pain, shoulder and knee problems or muscular injuries). In particular, we looked at the community musculoskeletal (in short, "MSK") service to understand how this service is used, how easy it is to access and how satisfied people are.

The survey was hosted online and promoted through local media, social media, information on the CCG website, our patient engagement group, our patient involvement network and through materials sent to GP practices and the MSK service.

We received 112 responses and would like to thank everyone who took the time to give us their views.

What happened next?
In November 2018, the CCG hosted an engagement workshop to seek views of patients suffering specifically with back pain.
The aim of the workshop was to:

  • Establish new ways to support patients suffering with back pain to prevent the likelihood of it becoming chronic
  • To discuss paient stories and personal experiences
  • Establish what is reasonable to expect from both the patient and the healthcare system
  • What could an effective treatment pathway look like for patients?

The CCG are now working to create an optimum treatment pathway which not only meets the needs of patients, but is sustainable within the demands of the service and its staff.

Also, as a result of our engagement work we are very excited to announce two multi-agency pilot schemes being trialed from April 2019 in the East Riding.

1 - Escape Pain
Working in partnership with ESCAPE-Pain and East Riding Leisure we are launching a pilot scheme for patients within the East Riding of Yorkshire CCG boundary suffering with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee access to a self-management programme to help understand how to cope with arthritic pain using exercise.

The programme is over 6 weeks, with x2 one and half hour sessions each week.

Please click here for further information on how you can be referred to the programme, or to try the online course first.

2 - Versus Arthritis

We are also piloting another initiative in partnership with Versus Arthritis, the UK's largest charity dedicated to supporting people with arthritis.

This initiative is aimed at patients suffering with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee and includes a 1hour face-to-face conversation with a Versus Arthritis volunteer to help patients understand their condition(s), self-care techniques, along with signposting those patients to local peer support groups for continued support and motivation.

This is expected to be introduced in April 2019 - More information coming soon.
