From strategic management to ethics and professional skills, practice managers from doctors’ surgeries have gained valuable insights into management best-practice.
As students on a tailor-made Postgraduate Certificate in Management Practice, 15 managers were able to gain up-to-date knowledge to run their practices at maximum efficiency. The programme, which has been taught at Hull University Business School, was developed for practice managers in Hull and the East Riding in partnership with the NHS East Riding of Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group.
Dr Gina Palumbo, Clinical Chair of the CCG, said: ‘I am delighted that that the programme has been a success and that our managers have been so enthusiastic about their learning at the Business School.
‘We wanted to equip our practice managers with the advanced management skills that will enable them to provide an efficient service to patients by running their practices in the most effective way possible. They have the knowledge to balance the needs of the different stakeholders such as GPs, NHS administrators and patients to provide an outstanding service.
"The NHS faces a national shortfall in terms of the number of professionally qualified healthcare managers. It’s important that we nurture the talent we have to encourage and inspire students on to successful and rewarding careers in support of healthcare delivery."
The programme, which also features teaching in marketing, organisational behaviour and finance, is now recruiting its second cohort. It is a 12-month programme consisting of six assessed modules, which each last 3 days. Successful graduates gain a Postgraduate Certificate, awarding them 60 credits at Masters Level.
Jeremy Wilcock, Business Engagement Manager at the Business School, said: "It was a great pleasure to attend the presentation session for these students. The lecturers all very much enjoyed delivering to this group, whom they found lively and engaging."
"It is very much to the students’ credit that they have earned an award which recognises their ability and which will help them to do a challenging and responsible job with effectiveness and authority."
The majority of the cohort is intending to proceed to a PG Diploma and eventual MSc. The programme will be developed and co-delivered by the Business School and the University’s Faculty of Health and Social Care.
